How to Prepare for your Tattoo Appointment

Protect

Keep the area to be tattooed out of the sun! Sunburns compromise the skin and can’t be tattooed on – avoid having to reschedule your tattoo by covering the area up or, at minimum, limiting UV exposure and using a high SPF sunscreen frequently.

Moisturize

Healthy skin helps me work faster, meaning less pain, and having better results. Apply lotion to the intended tattoo area daily for several days (ideally a week) up to your appointment.

Hydrate

Drink plenty of water several days up to your appointment, especially the evening before and morning of. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. At minimum the day before and of your appointment. Both alcohol and caffeine dehydrate the body, thins the blood, and increases inflammation. All of these side-effects can negatively impact the quality of your experience and the tattoo.

Sleep

A good night’s sleep is crucial, even for small tattoos. Take care of yourself and you will have a much more enjoyable experience.

Eat

Stabilize your blood sugar with a good meal around an hour before your session (especially for longer sessions!)

Dress for the occasion

Wear clothing that will allow us to have unobstructed access to the area we will be tattooing. If we are tattooing the top part of your arm or shoulder, for example, bring a sleeveless shirt so we don’t have to tie up your sleeves. It will be more comfortable for you and help us not mess up your clothes.

Creature comforts

Yes, you can bring snacks and water to your session (especially recommended for longer sessions). Temperature regulation is important in long sessions, too. You can bring layers or even a blanket – whatever makes you more comfortable and able to sit well.

Consider entertainment if you want a distraction – a book, podcast, or fully charged phone. I do have a tv in the studio that you will have access to watch or listen to whatever you like as well.

Other Accommodations

Please let us know if you have any specific accommodations that will make you feel more comfortable and at ease. Communicate early so we can work with you and be clear about expectations.
